A cavity is a small area of tooth decay that can often be repaired by your dentist by applying filling. This is common procedure for the dentists at Dr. Shur Dental that involves removing the decayed material, before filling it with a substance that is not subject to tooth decay. The location of the cavity and the primary function of the tooth, as well as its relationship to your smile, will influence the material used for the filling.

Cavities on the biting surface of molars and premolars are often repaired by amalgam fillings. Amalgam fillings are made from a mixture of metals, which are more affordable. Amalgam fillings very durable and long lasting. However, since amalgam is dark in color it isn’t recommended for teeth that are in anyway visible in your smile.

Composite fillings are made from a resin material that can be color matched and placed in a single procedure. These are more popular in visible areas of your smile and are not easily noticed.
