If your dental pulp, or nerve, becomes damages or infect, you may need root canal therapy in order to save your tooth. The pulp is a soft layer located in the center of the tooth. This pulp includes the tooth’s blood vessels and nerves. An infected pulp, if left untreated, may eventually lead to the death of the tooth, which would necessitate an extraction. To prevent need for an extraction, our dentist may suggest a treatment known as root canal therapy. During root canal treatment, Dr. Lyudmila Shur will remove the infection, thoroughly clean and sanitize the infected area, and seal the tooth. Finally, our dentist will cap the tooth with a restoration like a crown.
How do I know that I need root canal therapy?
There are several symptoms that could indicate the need for root canal therapy, including:
- Severe toothache when pressure is put on the tooth
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold objects
- Discoloration of a tooth
- Swelling and tenderness in the gums
- A persistent pimple on the gum near a tooth
